We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do. I used to suffer from claustrophobia and the one thing I noticed to be similar is that it is terribly easy to pick one part of the room and obsess about it. The yellow wallpaper was a symbol of her entrapment. However it is not only he physical entrapment but also a mental entrapment, she has an unbelieving husband (according to her) and she recently gave birth and she must be feeling some of the emotional strings connected to such an event. She must be feeling extremely overwhelmed and used. She feels as th ough her husband is not truly there for her, he constantly belittles her by calling her â€Å"little girl† and the like and he does not pay any attention to her ailments. He keeps telling her that she’ll be fine as long as she eats right, and gets plenty of rest and exercise, however he lacks the ability to understand that her problem are not physical. Jesse Owens Biography 1936: The Olympic Games were being held in Berlin, Germany. Berlin was buzzing with excitement. The Nazi Party was currently in control at the time. Hitler deemed that his perfect race would dominate the games. Jesse Owens proved him wrong. Beating many Nazis, he became one of the best runners in history. Jesses life leading up to his performance at the 1936 Olympic Games was a hard one, being a sickly child living in a poor family. On September 12, 1913, James Cleveland Owens, named J.C later, was born on a farm in Oakville, Alabama to Henry and Mary Emma Owens. They were both former slaves. He was the youngest of ten brothers and sisters. He grew up as a sickly child, constantly getting pneumonia and other illnesses. He had many other lung problems as well. In his daily life, he would work on the farm and going to a small, one room school house nine miles away from his home. When he was working on the farm he would help pick cotton out of the fields. He would pick about 100 pounds of cotton a day. This was hard on the childs lungs, and with his lung problems, this wasnt a good thing. When he was 10, his family moved to Cleveland, Ohio to find better work. This transition was hard for this family from the deep South. There, he worked part time at a cobblers shop and got to attend a real school. On the first day of school, he told the teacher that his name was J.C. She misunderstood his southern accent and thoug h he said Jesse. He was to shy to correct her, so this is how his name came to be. By the time Jesse reached junior high, he was wise of the ways of the streets. There he met two people that would change the rest of his life. The first was Minnie Ruth Solomon, a young woman whose family had moved north from a farm in the south, just like Jesses family had just done. As high schoolers, they both fell in love fast. The second was Charles Riley, the man who introduced Jesse to track and field. He saw potential in him, even though he hadnt shown any special athletic ability. To help Jesse, Charles beefed up his diet to help build up his muscles and help his still delicate legs. After this change in diet, Jesse impressed his new coach by running the 100- yard dash in 11 seconds, which was a remarkable time for a 15-year-old. After a while, Charles entered Jesse in other events, including the long and high jump. During this time of Jesses success, the Great Depression started. If not for his mother, Jesse would have had to leave school. But she insisted that he enroll at East Technical High School. Soon after Jesses enrollment, Charles Riley was hired as an assistant coach. Jesse continued to progress under Rileys coaching. He was named captain of the track and field team at his school and was elected as the student body president. This was a huge accomplishment because he went to a predominantly white school. This went on to show his outgoing personality and his athletic accomplishments. His accomplishments in high school were a pre-cursor to his success to come. In 1933 he entered Ohio State University under an unofficial scholarship. To make up for the money he worked part time jobs, such as a night elevator operator, pumped gas, worked in a library, and served as a page in the Ohio Statehouse. Jesse made his big appearance at the 1935 Big Ten meet in Michigan. The meet established his presence by finishing well in his events, winning three of his four. At the Big Ten Championship that may, he surprised people by breaking five world records and tying another, all in a span of 45 minutes. He almost didnt compete because of a sore back that he had because of a fall down a flight of stairs. He eventually convinced his coach to let him compete. To test his back, he ran the 100- meter dash. He ran an amazing time of 9.3 seconds. That is where he became a national star. Three years before, Ruth Solomon, his soon to be wife, had given birth to a daughter. When Ruths parents, they wouldnt allow her to see Jesse. Although they lived apart, Jesse sti ll sent money to help Ruth pay for their daughters needs. In July of 1935, he married Ruth Solomon in Cleveland. The following year, he was suspended from the Ohio State track and field for poor grades. He worked hard to raise his average, just in time for the spring. He went to the Olympic trials for the 1936 summer Olympics. He dominated the sprint events there and emerged on the top of the American squad. Jesses amazing collegiate career was his introduction to the nation and the world and a sign of a soon to be great Olympian. The crowd roared with excitement as the opening ceremony of the 1936 Olympics games in Berlin began. The group in favor of no boycott won by two and a half votes. That meant that there would be a squad going to the Olympic Games. So, at that very Olympic Games, Jesse Owens showed his superiority in track and field. At these games, he stood at 510 and weighed 165 lbs. In Berlin, he won his first gold medal in the 100- yard dash with a time of 10.3. He then went on to capture the long jump with a world record breaking distance of 26 feet 5 inches. During this event, an incident happened that almost had Jesse disqualified from the event. During his practice jump, the judges counted it as his first jump. The next jump he jumped over the line, causing a fault on his part. Finally, on the last jump, he jumped his record- breaking leap, defeating his competition German Competition, Luz Long. After this event, Hitler refused to shake his hand after his win over Long. He then went on to go a record- shattering 20.7 in his 200- meter. He returned home a celebrity, hailed in open car parades and banquets. After the Olympics, Long and Owens became close friends for a long time. He was well known for talking to youth groups, professional organizations, civic meetings, sports banquets, PTA, church organizations, brotherhood and black history programs, as well as high schools and college ceremonies. He went on tour as a leader of a 12- piece orchestra. He went barnstorming with basketball and baseball teams and put on running exhibitions. But, the greatest job that he loved most was a playground director in Cleveland. He also worked with underprivileged children there too as a board me mber and former director of the Chicago Boys Club. He eventually couldnt take the prolonged separation from his family, so he decided to open a Laundromat in the area of his home. In 1940 he suffered a double major loss when his mother died and the Internal Revenue Service got after him for back taxes. That forced him to close his business, lowering his income. Feeling bad for not working harder as a student, he was determined to go back to Ohio State to receive a degree since the loss of his business. This helped him earn income after the fall of his company. After that, he took a satisfying job with the Ford Motor Company in Detroit to look after the social need of thousands of black workers on the Ford payroll. After the war, he moved to Chicago with his family. He then when into the public relations busi ness, using his still- famous personality for the use of a variety of companies. His job became a boost when the Associated Press named him the greatest track-and-field athlete in history in 1950. As the years passed, he watched in sadness as his records were broken. Betty Boop Essays - Films, Betty Boop, English-language Films Betty Boop Betty Boop The best case study in animation to illustrate the powerful influence society has over the types of films that are produced is the story of Betty Boop. She was a major cartoon character before the Production Code of 1934 was put into place, and her dramatic and fatal transformation illustrates how a product created under one set of standards often withers when placed in a new set. At the same time, the Code alone cannot explain why this dizzy little flapper degenerated so quickly. Betty Boop exists today solely as a merchandising item. Betty's face and figure can be found on T-shirts, posters, and all sorts of things. Her current popularity in merchandise is somewhat puzzling, as the Fleischers released all of her short cartoons before 1940, save for a halfhearted TV special in the early 1980s and a brief cameo in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. While colorized versions of her cartoons exist, they were never given the same degree of exposure as the colorized versions of Max Fleischer's Popeye cartoons. Seen today, it is easy to see why these cartoons were often revived in the trippy 1960s. While not psychedelic by any means, they are off beat' with other animation. Seeing them for the first time, one can hardly believe one's eyes. These are cartoons that are definitely not from the Disney mode nor are they strictly of the Looney Tunes variety. They are odd. And Betty was their princess. Betty Boop's cartoons were all directed by Max Fleischer's brother Dave, and Dave Fleischer created a world of dark surrealism. The fluid natures of these cartoons make them difficult to describe in a coherent fashion. Dave Fleischer almost certainly did not use story boards or even a script in some of these films and Boop's adventures were free form as a result. Ad-libbing by the voice actors (including Mae Questel, who provided Betty's voice in many films) was the norm, resulting in a very spontaneous-sounding soundtrack. The animation was at times amazingly precise, and at other times very crude. Betty's unique design was the work of Grim Natwick, one of the few animators at Fleischer who had an art school education yet many other Fleischer cartoons are obviously denizens of the Terrytoons/Felix the Cat/Early Mickey Mouse school. These cartoons have stories that amble about in an almost dreamlike way; Snow White possesses a hallucinogenic series of vignettes each even less connect ed to the original fairytale. The transformation of Koko the Clown into the Ghost of Cab Calloway seems to predict the animation of the Genie in Aladdin decades later. Today's animation fans would appreciate introducing themselves with the work of Fleischer's studio. Betty Boop possessed long shapely legs and large round eyes, qualities that may indicate her to be the spiritual grandmother of ladies such as Lum, who populate the anime films of the 1980s and 1990s. Perhaps a more important similarity is the targeting of adults as Betty's audience. The Betty Boop cartoons may have entertained children, but the bulk of the humor was geared to adults (and probably aimed squarely at adult males). As revealed in the documentary Boop-Oop-A-Doop, Betty's animators not only found excuses to back light her or disrobe her but also added subliminal details. (Outright nudity never occurred in the Fleischer world, but implied nudity did). Yet simultaneously, the cartoon characters who lustily pursued Betty were invariably depicted as freakish malformed, goggly-eyed dirty old men. Thus, Fleischer's world not only satisfied the audience's desire for voyeurism, but it also chastised those who engaged in it as perverts. Raising charges of sexism against the Fleischer studio is thus difficult. For the most part Boop was a tease, although Hollywood's habit of erratic self-censorship should not suggest that all innuendos were purely teases. As Smooden pointed out in Animating Culture, the finale of Betty Boop and the Little King leaves the audience with the distinct impression that Boop has become the Little King's mistress. Betty's hula dance in Popeye the Sailor suggests an exotic dancer of a different stripe, as the Boop is clearly topless. Now What, Freshmen and Fellow Grads Some Advice From a Recent CollegeGraduate When I look back over the past sixteen years (whoa) of education, I find that I have a lot of mixed feelings. I recall that back in elementary and middle school- and even in high school to some extent- all I wanted was to grow up and be treated as an adult. I felt that what I was learning had little to no basis in what I would need to know in the real world, and I  was endlessly jealous of my brother, three years older and living it up in college, being all self-sufficient and whatnot. And so I slogged my way through high school, doing my homework, making the grade, playing the team sports, and waking up every morning to do it all over again. Its safe to say I took high school for granted, not considering that life outside my parents house was a little less glamorous than Id imagined. I was one of those annoying people who managed to get into their dream school- in my case, the University of Washington in Seattle. It was the same school my brother was going to, about to enter his senior year, and some of my closest friends from high school got in too. In my minds eye, I could see it now: big lecture halls full of academics, classes full of relevant information I wanted to learn, big, spacious libraries to study in, and the freedom to set my own schedule.  Well, some of these things are true. Indeed, the lecture halls are pretty big, there  is an abundance of large, well-stocked libraries, and there is the potential to set a schedule that works for you- but lets break it down a little with some truths and misconceptions about the college life: Lecture halls for freshmen are not pretty big;  theyre huge, especially if youre entering one of those famous weeder courses, AKA a huge class meant to sort through the students actually passionate about a given subject vs. the people just trying to get a credit. I took an introductory biology course with more than 700 people in one classroom. Libraries are grand and wonderful places to study,  but it may be more difficult to find a table than you could have imagined possible. On that note, if youre studying by yourself, dont be that person who takes up a huge table- if you have to be that person (if there are no smaller tables open, for example), then for goodness sakes let other people sit with you. Your schedule will be ridiculous. At least, your freshman year schedule will be. Its very possible that you will  take an 8:30 a.m. class and not re-enter a  classroom until 3:00 that afternoon. But you roll with it, because you need those classes and who really  needs consistency? Worry not, though- the higher you climb in credits, the earlier you get to register, and the earlier you register, the more likely you are to get the classes you need at a time you want. Study. Abroad. If your university/college offers a study abroad program, you really should look into it. Chances are, your school will make a lot of hoops for you to jump through to qualify and be accepted into the program, but it is absolutely worth it. I personally missed out due to some credit snafus, but friends who went had the most amazing time and wouldnt trade the experience for anything. After all, how often does the opportunity to live abroad for several months with no strings attached (minus $) come along? You probably have no idea what you want to do with the rest of your life, and thats totally okay. As I just mentioned, I had some credit snafus, and these snafus had everything to do with the fact that I changed my major no fewer than ten times  (and that is no exaggeration). When you graduate high school, theres a lot of talk about the rest of your lives, and theres pressure to feel like you have to know what the rest of your life is going to look like. So you may get to college with the definitive aspiration of being the worlds best surgeon Only to take a year of science classes and realize that chemistry may just be put on this earth to ruin you, and youll have to tweak your goals a little. True story: I started college with my eyes on the medical school prize; I graduated last week with a degree in English and Comparative Literature (theres no need to discuss my stints in international relations, economics, computer science, art, industrial design, etc.). College culture can be encompassing And distracting. It seems that movies, in their depiction of college life, tend to look at undergrads as party animals, and rarely do they show a lot of actual homework, studying, or even attending class. No doubt, there are plenty of opportunities to party, but dont let yourself forget the real reason youre paying an insane amount of money to attend a given school. The temptation to go out on a school night (or multiple school nights) can be hard to resist, especially when your friends are going, but getting your work done, being prepared for class, and showing up ready to learn (read: not hungover and/or exhausted) is usually (90% of the time) the better option. Internships. Internships, internships, internships. Everybody needs a resume and resumes with relevant experience look more well-rounded than resumes that only detail the summers you worked in your hometowns ice cream parlor (I did this until the end of my junior year when I realized how nice it would be to put something more academic on my work history). Like studying abroad, having an internship while in school is a unique and invaluable experience. Often, internships can be taken for college credit and intern employers are usually very understanding about the irregularities of a college schedule and are willing to work around that. After you graduate, employers are going to be much less understanding when you randomly need to show up an hour late because you have an unexpected project to get done. Senioritis is real, and it starts way before your senior year. It was true in high school and it becomes no less true in college- the closer you get to graduating, the less you feel like putting your nose in a book. In high school, I think I started getting antsy and unmotivated at the end of my junior year or  the start of my senior year. In college, I was ready to throw my papers out the window about halfway through sophomore year- but you really cant do that. Grades arent  as important in college if youre not gearing towards grad school, but they still matter and you still need to get your work done, no matter how much the outside world is calling. Finding a job is hard.  If you talk to your parents,  chances are decent that they got a job right out of school. Im sorry to say, but chances are less decent that you will- but thats not the end of the world. It seems like now more than ever, college students are graduating just to move right back in with mom and dad. But dont sweat it: the job market is tough. Dont let it break you down if you dont get your dream job right away (or if you dont even know what your dream job  is yet). Youre not really the adultiest of adults yet. I know, that is hard to hear (its just as hard to say, er, type). There is so much that goes into being an adult and you dont learn any of it in college. Sure, I now know how to calculate the speed of a rolling ball, but we never learned how to pay taxes or set up a 401K. This is where experienced adults come in. My freshman year, I didnt want any help from my father- I was eighteen! A responsible, grown woman who could make her own choices. Now, as a twenty-one-year-old young woman who can  make her own choices, I shoot my dad a text asking which off-brand cereal  he would recommend to someone on a (very) tight budget. Above all, just relax. The tests, they will be hard. The homework, there will be lots. The all-nighters, there will be some. But you will make it through all of that. You will spend hours sitting in uncomfortable chairs, learning things you never knew were important; you will write papers that you hate; you will write papers that you love. You may go through a period of stealing toilet paper from public restrooms because you had no time to shop. You may struggle to find a job; you may party too hard one night and sleep through a class (dont do this, trust me). But youll come through these four or five years with a new lease on life. Theres no guarantee youll know how to be an adult, but there is the guarantee that youll figure it out. So sit back, relax, and get ready for a really whacky ride.
